Jay Howell for Illustrated Madness.

I think everyone feels pigeonholed to some degree. But it’s my job to continually try to work beyond what people know me most for. I’m very proud of what I’m pigeonholed for though, so I’m grateful to be pigeonholed <haha>. I’m proud of my pigeonhole.

I consider myself a cartoonist, not an artist. I think cartoons are more important than people realize… Some of the most famous artists in the world right now just take other people’s cartoons and turn them into paintings. Skateboarding continues to be and will always be my biggest inspiration. I’ll always make skateboard graphics until skateboard companies don’t allow me to make them any longer.

I’m a workaholic and I’m addicted to drawing.

I think early on I developed a good work ethic. Skinner Davis taught me all about that and it’s something I really pride myself on. I draw as much as possible, and tattooing falls within that as well. It’s just another medium I’m able to express myself in.

I think Suitcase Joe’s photographs are very raw, honest, and super fun. I don’t think enough people see the beauty and fun in his work. But I knew right away when I saw the picture I’d be working on that it would be super great to collaborate on. I love doing mixed media, although I hate painting… I did it for him and that’s that. I love his style, I love his photographs.
