- [MISTER SISTER. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/08/12/mister-sister-eng/) - Each Mister Sister is born from a moment charged with emotion. Some stem from searing pain; others, from rage. Some arose from euphoria, others from anguish, others from despair. Others were completed amidst the weariness of a heavy, drawn-out patience, while others took shape to the rhythm of a song played a thousand times in a row. It was always an intense exercise of pencil against paper, ensuring the strokes conveyed nothing contrary to what I was feeling. - [Xenix on Social Networks - Pain, Truth, and Permanence](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/04/30/xenix-on-social-networks-pain-truth-and-permanence/) - I feel like every creative should have an opinion on what they like and don't like. You need to be true to yourself and what you think, but also open to change and differences in mentality. Even if I disagree with someone's art or tattoos, it's a person who found their way to make a living creatively and pushed through whatever they had to do to make it. So, fair enough. Let the next newcomer try to do their thing. - [Twin Arrows, AZ.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/04/28/twin-arrows-az/) - Twin Arrows is a ghost town off of U.S. Route 66 in Arizona, located on historic Hopi & Diné land.... Since then the property, including its two giant water towers, has become a canvas for locally Indigenous graffiti artists as well as international painters & abandoned adventure enthusiasts. - [Knuckle Sandwich.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/04/23/knuckle-sandwich/) - We started this band while I was finishing up coursework for a Master's Degree in Chicana Studies; my research revolved around the performance of masculinity in Hardcore punk rock. The lyrics I write are rooted in violence as an extension of masculinity. As art, Knuckle Sandwich isn’t necessarily an endorsement of violence, but the performance thereof. There is a ritualistic aspect to the mosh pit, as it is a space where people can assert masculinity and appreciation for the noise. - [Leslie Puett's HOUSEFIRE breaks Furniture Store into L.A.'s Art Scene](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/04/21/leslie-puetts-housefire-breaks-furniture-store-into-l-a-s-art-scene/) - She says the name {of her book} came about because “True pain lies under our own minds like roofs… We gotta tend to what we have before we set it ablaze.” - [Sob Story.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/04/16/sob-story/) - I think Sob Story as a moniker aligns with a lot of people's lives — everyone has their sob stories they tell themselves, everybody has their excuses in life. It was born from a moment in time when things weren't going my way, but almost satirically. I think a lot of my work depicts a funnier side of life. But the name itself comes from a Minor Threat song. - [SUPERCHIEF GALLERY // LIFESUXBILLRULES](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/01/21/superchief-gallery-lifesuxbillrules/) - To me, the art gallery world always represented something very elitist and bougie. What we started doing with Superchief was bringing a lot of working-class people into the fold, because everybody we created with were just kids from the gutter trying to make it happen like us. - [LIL TAKEOUT // SKATETHISSS.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/01/08/lil-takeout-skatethisss/) - Back then, recognition came from pure skill. Today, you still have to be good, but social presence has become another layer in the process. You need online visibility on top of talent if you want sponsors or brand partners. It is not a phase the culture went through; it is how the landscape evolved. - [SMOKED909.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2026/01/06/smoked909/) - I think everyone should be proud to claim where they come from. It’s not something you can change. - [CORAZÓN MALEANTE .](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/12/31/corazon-maleante-eng/) - I feel that everything from my childhood in Colombia - the popular art, the love letters that were given as gifts in the 90s, the song dedications, the merengue - has made my work focus on a more 'romantic' theme… But in a deeper way than simply having a partner, it's also about being able to give love to your friends and the world around you, not just something aesthetic. - [Amsterdam Ceiling Art Show 1.11 at Molli Chaoot (info)](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/12/17/molli-chaoot-art-show/) - [INDIANA HOLMES.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/12/23/indiana-holmes/) - I’ve been shooting photos for quite some time but have been focused on graffiti for about ten years now. I first set out to capture the old gems I grew up seeing. Most of them no longer exist, but seeing how quickly times are changing made me feel a need to document as much as possible. - [LA PIZZA DEL ESTE LA // CHEF EMMANUEL "MANNY" VASQUEZ.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/10/08/la-pizza-del-este-la-chef-manny-chori-vasquez/) - I wanted to use pizza as a platform and add fine dining Mexican food on top of it. I wanted to take the slice as a vessel and extend that to everyone in the neighborhoods - the day laborer, the kids from public school. It's elevating the culture, merging a fine dining aspect with the reach of real communities. - [MALA INFLUENCIA - PUNK POSTERS from BOGOTÁ! ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/07/14/mala-influencia-borrador/) - Mala Influencia is an invitation to each person to do whatever they want, whatever they can imagine. In reality, there are no good or bad influences; life lays the cards on the table, and only you decide what you want to do and which path to take. Idiota. - [PRISON AFFAIR ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/09/17/prison-affair-eng/) - JUANMA (Bass, Vocals): There's really no clear goal or message behind Prison Affair. It's not at all thoughtful, more like… Idiotic. - [SERGIO "SURGE" HERNANDEZ. POP'S TATTOOS. EAST SAN DIEGO.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/11/01/sergio-surge-hernandez-pops-tattoos-east-san-diego/) - There's an anonymous quality about graffiti. Nowadays, everything is documented - something interests you, you want your friends to know, so you post about it. I'm not against people posting more or less; I like social media. I think it brings more people together. But there's still a level of mystery as to who some of these people are, and I think that's really special for the time we're living in. - [Dale187. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/05/16/dale187-esp/) - Crecí entre dos costas, Nueva York y Tijuana, Baja California. Hace poco he estado pintando Ciudad de México. - [DALE187 .](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/05/16/dale187/) - I grew up between two coasts, NYC and Tijuana, Baja California. Lately I've been painting Mexico City. I feel like there's a lot more police in New York and gang culture in California. Tijuana is a little bit of everything: police, deported gangsters, cartels, everything. Living between them all was like visiting separate, distinct melting pots. Everything I've picked up from traveling has all melted down to one name, just like these places. - [JAVIER CABRAL: Editor-in-Chief of LA Taco, Vox/Guitar in Foolanos.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/05/13/javier-cabral-editor-in-chief-of-la-taco-vox-guitar-in-foolanos/) - It's never about the writer or person creating the journalism. It's always about the subject, and I feel like that's been lost. - [ALISON BRAUN - Archiving those we loved & lost.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/05/05/alison-braun-archiving-those-we-loved-lost/) - It made me realize that scenes aren’t just built on sound, but on relationships, values, and shared experiences. Interviewing bands shifted them from being subjects in my frame to people with layered stories. I saw how much effort and sacrifice went into touring, recording, surviving — how much of it was done purely out of love for the music and the community. - [P.I.G. - People Infected by Greed.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/05/06/p-i-g/) - I don’t feel obligated to stand for femmes across the board. I believe each of us can do that for ourselves if we feel so compelled. I can be described as an angry woman, but I don’t speak for angry women, I speak for myself and hope it’s cathartic for others. Sometimes I wonder, “Who does my freedom free?” But I do what I do because I am compelled to, or I will perish; I don’t create under a plan of activist action. My truth is political because we live in a political world. You can’t be unpolitical, but you can be ignorant. - [George Perez for Desmadre World.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/10/george-perez-for-desmadre-world/) - If you've noticed, ever since I became a regular at the Comedy Store, other people who look like me have been starting to show out more & more in the crowd and on stage. I wanna let everybody know that everything is possible with dedication. Look at me, dog. I went to prison, lost everything I had, got out, got it all back and more. You're only gonna get what you put in, straight up. - [Cadena for Desmadre World.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/10/cadena-for-desmadre-world/) - Rap inspired me from a young age. My mom bought me the Mickey Unrapped CD that had a bunch of popular rap songs with Disney characters performing alongside the original artists... Whoomp! (There It Is) by Tag Team had me in a chokehold. The beat was infectious, and I knew the real version of the - [MAURO DE LA TIERRA.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/04/01/mauro-de-la-tierra/) - I grew up in a punk house on the east side of San Antonio, Texas. I saw a lot of addiction and the effects of the prison industrial complex firsthand. Finding art taught me to be more confident in myself, and how to extend myself to others. - [Miguel Maldonado-Velasco III.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/04/10/miguel-maldonado-velasco-iii/) - It’s inspiring to see so many people put out art their own way, which is something I’m still learning to do with my career aspirations. Instead of waiting or relying on resources, DIY means looking towards your communities and peers to create whatever you want while learning in the process. I love that you can brush shoulders with iconic creatives while working alongside people who are passionate about learning the craft just as you are. - [Mr. Chino - PRAYERS, Cholo Goth Night.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/27/mr-chino/) - I feel like the mentalities from harder lifestyles never go away. No matter where you go, you were raised by your community and it molded you into the person you are. - [Sofia Enriquez.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/12/sofia-enriquez/) - My work revolves around a MUCHO ethos, which comes from culturally understanding every Hispanic worker I know as doing a lot, all the time. We fix cars, build homes, harvest people's food, then cook, plate, and serve it. We work in warehouses and on top of roofs, in poor working conditions for less than our worth, and still find the time to create and dance and laugh with each other. We're jacks of all trades. We have to be; we don't come from money, so we have to know how to do everything because that's how we got here, right? - [Joker Brand's Estevan Oriol for Desmadre World.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/11/joker-brands-estevan-oriol-for-desmadre-world/) - At the time Joker Brand began, there weren't any clothing lines repping our culture other than what we considered old-school. We wanted our own to add a twist to fashion by putting our art on what we produced. - [Jesse Jay/Los Guys Kustoms for Desmadre World.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/08/jesse-jay-los-guys-kustoms-for-desmadre-world/) - I’ve been in and out of airbrushing since I was young but decided I wanted to take it seriously around 4 years ago. I made contact with a few artists who were already in the game, a few turned me down. Then there was Mr. Joe Hernandez... He took me under his wing to teach me, or what he says, how to be confident about my craft. I took on any project that fell into my hands just for the experience and to know in my heart that I was there and I did that. - [Joe Altmann for Desmadre World.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/03/08/joe-altmann-for-desmadre-world/) - I grew up in a small town in southeast Germany where there wasn’t much to do besides get sh*tfaced or get into fights with boneheads. Music was my way out, my excuse to travel to shows, to see something bigger than my hometown. Early on, I learned that if you want something, you just have to do it yourself. No one’s gonna hand it to you. - [Sailor Punk. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/17/sailor-punk-eng/) - The noise we make is based a lot on pain, hate, and resentment. A silent cry that does not stop but evolves, giving rise to a fight against the ego of each inconsequential being. - [Sailor Punk. - [Jay Howell for Illustrated Madness.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/15/jay-howell-for-illustrated-madness/) - I think everyone feels pigeonholed to some degree. But it’s my job to continually try to work beyond what people know me most for. I’m very proud of what I’m pigeonholed for though, so I’m grateful to be pigeonholed . I’m proud of my pigeonhole. - [Suitcase Joe's Introduction to Illustrated Madness. FT. Hopes & Jimmy Bonks.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/15/suitcase-joes-introduction-to-illustrated-madness-ft-hopes-jimmy-bonks/) - Illustrated Madness has been a long time in the making in my head. My love for zines, graffiti, illustration, independent publications, and photography has all come together right here in your hands. A small, humble beginning to something bigger, I hope. More than anything, I like to imagine that one day, some kid will stumble upon a copy of Illustrated Madness, tucked away in a forgotten box or chest, and it will spark the beginning of their curiosity to discover more. Hopefully, it leads them to uncover their own love for photography, art, and illustration, taking them on wild adventures that only a life of creative pursuit can offer. An adventure of discovery that will lead them to their own kind of splendid madness. - [Shamon Cassette.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/14/shamon-cassette/) - There's no place for a black person in a white army. My mom was a single-parent soldier and had me very young. I was raised in Kanagawa, Japan, just outside of Tokyo. I remember seeing her experience a lot for the first time growing up, even though her main push in raising me was to get off the base. I was a kid, a lone wolf, just going around to... - [HOKZ / HOKZYN. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/14/hokz-hokzyn-eng/) - I am almost never 100% sure of what I want to say. Sometimes I am, but most of the time it is an impulse or an idea that comes, takes hold of me and haunts me. It is not until after I go out to paint, write or do something about it that I manage to understand what it could really mean, but sometimes that message never comes through. I am thankful for my friends, people close to me, and people who stop to look at my work because many times, it is through you that I manage to see and understand things about my work that I would not have been able to understand on my own. - [HOKZ / HOKZYN. TSK:. - [Sal Preciado for Illustrated Madness: El Clasico Tattoo.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/11/sal-preciado-for-illustrated-madness-el-clasico-tattoo/) - Tattooing keeps me connected to my self, my soul, my clients, and my community. After 25 years of tattooing and coming from EAST LOS, it also keeps me connected to the past, while keeping tradition alive in my own way. - [SUCKYBAT.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/01/27/suckybat/) - My message and style is I don’t give a f*ck. I’m just here to paint this bat and piss people off. - [Saucyboi69 for Illustrated Madness.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/08/saucyboi69-for-illustrated-madness/) - Erotic art is the most important art form to me. It is a declaration that you are proud to see the beauty in something others keep hidden or under strict control, that you can be confident in yourself and what you feel a natural attraction towards. The prouder you are, the better. There is a stigma attached that can make people look down on the genre or not want to interact with it at all. But that’s what makes it feel like an underdog tale to me, and a fight worth fighting. - [Will Carsola for Illustrated Madness.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/02/05/will-carsola-for-illustrated-madness/) - There were many moments like this, but the most pivotal moment was when I dropped out of art school. I was a painting major but after starting to make videos with my friend Dave Stewart, I decided to drop out and teach myself how to write, direct, edit, and more. Making sketch comedy, graffiti, skate, and music videos led me to animation, which helped further define my art style. That led me to co-create a couple Adult Swim shows, which led to my involvement with Liquid Death. - [Calendar '25.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/01/14/calendar-25/) - So here's a test example of what I made... I don't think it looks bad, but it seems a little basic, for sure. Almost too basic. I liked the idea of very simple calendar pages, as to not take away from the photos. Because the emphasis is on these photographers and the way these photos - [Are you with us yet? Los Angeles is Cyberpunk 2025: Fire & ICE, Prison-Slave Labor Heroes, The Olympics & Technology](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2025/01/10/are-you-with-us-yet-los-angeles-is-cyberpunk-2025-fire-ice-prison-slave-labor-heroes-the-olympics-technology/) - The root of the LA Fires is, ironically, in its prohibition. - [POR VIDA CAFÉ.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/12/13/por-vida-cafe/) - I hope that we can still be part of this community moving forward, but the future is untold. We don't know what's gonna happen when the owner of this building wants to build 4 stories high and put a retail spot under here, probably double or triple our rent. We have a lot to display, but we also have to walk very cordially over the next few years. I predict a big shift coming up. It's a hard conversation, but I think it's a conversation that needs to be had now. - [FRKO.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/12/09/frko/) - Sometimes institutions don't want my edgy/challenging art. Some of these places want to control what black art is. They only want to show what is comfortable for them. - [Eleazar.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/12/20/eleazar/) - I moved by myself exclusively for many years. I didn't want to collab with anyone, I wanted to do it all on my own. That's a young artist's game, I feel. When you first get into your art more seriously, you think you're gonna show everybody - there's never been a producer, rapper, whatever, that can do it like me. The deeper you get in the game, you start realizing, damn, a lot of my heroes had teams low-key. Even though on the outside, it looks like one guy. But nobody does anything by themselves - everybody has someone that put them up in their first gallery, gave them their 1st break, gave them their first shot at something greater. - [Undertones with Suitcase Joe.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/12/17/undertones-with-suitcase-joe/) - Initially I set out to document Skid Row historically, better than anyone else has. I wanted to thoroughly capture the neighborhood. What I didn't know would happen, was that I'd fall in love with the people and the place and that it would change my perspective on life all the way around. - [PHOTOJOURNAL: GUEZ X DEAD RELATIVES. "PLAYA MODE" 11/1/24](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/11/22/photojournal-guez-x-dead-relatives-playa-mode/) - When it comes to curating shows, the one thing I try to keep in mind is showcasing a glimpse of my world/reality. Including people is a huge aspect to my life, because our community is what shapes this culture. -GUEZ. - [SOVIET.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/10/22/soviet/) - There's no intentional message behind my painting besides an underlying current of being anti-establishment. I try to paint things I would find interesting if I weren't the painter. I approach my work as someone outside myself, a fictional character. I want my art to make you think and laugh about the absurdity of life. - [MACUAHUITL PRESS.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/10/24/macuahuitl-press/) - Between all these artists who carry Indigeneity in their blood or consciousness, there's a strong sense of identity & passion in reclamation. All of us are working to embrace, repair, and nurture our roots. Working with bands and collaboration in general has been integral to my journey. So many of us on this path come from different cultures; I've learned a lot about pre-Columbian languages & customs from all over the Americas. All of these connections arose through this circle of creativity, from following our passions, in a kind of new-wave oral tradition. - [PLANET ON A CHAIN.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/09/26/planet-on-a-chain/) - I do like that there isn't pressure to come up with lyrics on the spot, as I would when playing in bands locally. I like to read about world events and how systems work, so the space lets my thoughts breathe and grasp of topics widen. I think my lyrical themes have been able to develop deeper, having creative isolation from everyone else. There have been times when every book I read lets me speak up about something different happening in the world. - [RANDY BOOGIE.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/09/26/randy-boogie/) - I hate talking about my achievements because my paintings derive from graffiti and I never got into design so I could flaunt. But it is necessary so people understand where you've been and where you're going. I guess I got over that when I landed that art direction gig for the Super Bowl... Lil Wayne's crying cause he’s not performing halftime, people cried when I made Native motion graphics for the game entrance . But it was the most eyes I’ve ever had on my ART. It was surreal and exciting. I needed to feel that. - [TRACI V LORDS.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/09/24/traci-v-lords/) - I remember at a Sound and Fury around 2013, I noticed a kid wearing a shirt I drew a few years back... I told him, "Hey, I drew that." And he said, "No you didn't." And because I didn't sign my art, I couldn't say anything. I didn't put my name on it, so it wasn't real. And then he walked away. That was the first time I thought, 'Okay, not only can I do this and have my work out there, I could potentially put my name on it.' - [GUEZ.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/09/23/guez/) - The Bay has a bit more intriguement with bright colors, keeping block letters funky. It's a very hip-hop tradition; I grew up listening to artists like Gang Starr & Mobb Deep, which I still love to this day. But as I got older and a little more sophisticated, I got more attracted to punk and DIY shows. Metal and hardcore brought out the more aggressive side of what graffiti can offer. - [DEATHLILI.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/09/20/deathlili/) - Initially, the inadequate representation of people who came from walks of life like mine propelled me into creating art that represents us - we are more than the common misconceptions of lowriding, gang culture, & baggy clothing. We too enjoy a darker side of life and heavy music. - [HEZ - BASTANTE MENTALES. - [3 MINUTES WITH STRAY CAT! GATO CALLEJERO. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/09/02/3-minutes-with-stray-cat-gato-callejero-eng/) - I think money is a fascinating display of human ingenuity and a testament to our times. For money we sell the best of ourselves. For money we give up our dreams. For money people kill, betray, steal and lie. For money, wars are declared, people are oppressed, prisons are built and nature is destroyed. Because of money the world is as it is: divided, bloody, in pain, hungry and threatened. - [EXTA - CÁRCEL MENTAL // TRACK BY TRACK. CDMX PUNK ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/08/28/exta-carcel-mental-track-by-track-cdmx-punk/) - Punk, I feel like it's a more binary place, more for men. And I mean, it's been a little difficult to take space in spaces that normally belong to men, right? I can tell you the truth is that they're not willing to let go. So, obviously, if you as a dissident go out and challenge that and do whatever the f*ck you want, there will always be people who won't agree. It's a super stupid cultural thing. But that's why we're punk, because there are things to protest about and punk's about speaking your mind. - [INQIRAD - THERE'S NO GOOD KING.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/08/07/inqirad-theres-no-good-king/) - In Arabic, we call the word resistance intifada. Punk is the essence of the word intifada. This is what the Arabs need - we need punk. - [FUSION BABIES - SACRED ANGER.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/08/07/fusion-babies-sacred-anger/) - From our performances, I hope people take away that it’s okay to be angry. It’s okay to be sad. I hope people can think and rethink the things we need to do to make the world a better place for all of us - [ARTICHOKAT - ENTRE BASTIDORES CON LA DIBUJANTE (Behind-The-Scenes with the Artist)](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/08/15/artichokat-eng/) - Do it yourself and if you don't know how, find a friend or someone to learn it from. And when you know it, share it. I have learned the most about drawing from my friends, they are what inspire me and they are my drive to continue doing things, doing it alone makes no sense. - [MAKING HARDCORE A THREAT AGAIN! UNTUK PALESTINA. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/07/25/making-hardcore-a-threat-again-untuk-palestina-eng-ind/) - Just like Punk which was born from resistance, we feel it is important and necessary to "do something" about what is happening in Palestine. And this attitude of resistance is the spirit of punk itself. - [ABYECTA. Y toca feliz igualmente. - [VIOLENCIA. ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/07/12/violencia-eng/) - Something that happens to us often is that in any city in the US we play in, there are always a couple of Mexicans. And I can see that they get excited and/or happy to see a band from Mexico playing in those parts. It's nice to be able to talk with them a little, meet new people who identify as Mexican but grew up in another country and in another reality totally different from the one we had. I think that as Latinos we are happy to find ourselves far from home. I also think that, without telling ourselves, we know that in one way or another, we found a way to be there. - [ESCAPE - ELYGOAT.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/07/12/escape-elygoat/) - As a kid, wrestling was a big part of the culture in my house. I didn’t connect with it until I got older and could see the value in stories as something to learn and take inspiration from - Lucha specifically with the characters and their personalities, it’s easy to lose yourself in the world of it all. But stories can also be a path to finding yourself, a means to relate & aspire. - [VIOLENCIA. - [OCHO OJOS.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/06/12/ocho-ojos/) - With a team of two, some tasks are naturally easier, while others become harder to complete. The brainstorming process usually happens organically - one idea leads to another, and sometimes some ideas get dropped. Others get put away for future projects. Like with any creative endeavor between people, there is always some friction. Herb and Josh have learned that a mutual respect for each other and their work, keeps them evolving and helps them work out creative difference in every aspect of the Ocho Ojos project. - [ZANJEER زنجیر.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/06/14/zanjeer/) - According to Europe, I'm a "person of color," "Pakistani," "Muslim," "brown male" and various other identities that mean nothing to me. Meanwhile in Pakistan, I had other identities to contend with regarding the linguistic backgrounds in my family, the province I lived in, religious sects... But really, I could care less about these things. I've always identified as an outsider and an outcast. Thus every sort of identity feels like a burden on me. There are more fluid and interesting ways to understand the diversity of human cultures and groups that exist... Let's deconstruct this sh*t. - [ABYECTA ](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/06/17/abyecta-eng/) - The exercise of thinking and feeling from the individual to the collective is more important than ever. There is a lot of talk about individual empowerment, but how does that contribute to everyone else?… I say this because really, yes, I enjoy playing and traveling, but that doesn't changes anyone's life - the world is falling to pieces and the only thing that makes sense now more than ever is solidarity. - [GUILLERMO MILLAN - SINKING INTO MADNESS. <>](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/06/10/guillermo-millan/) - I’ve been friends with everyone in The Dark before we started working together, especially the guitarist, Robert. We've been friends since the 2000's. In our earlier years, we played in bands together, silkscreen printed, and ran punk distros way before social media. Our friendship has always been tight and fun with a heavy focus on - [TALKING VENUES: 1ST STREET POOL & BILLIARDS.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/05/09/protected-1st-street/) - My uncle and dad bought 1st Billiard’s in 1969, opened up the bar in 1970, and picked up another location downtown called 5 Star. He always took me under his wing so I would barback & help out when I could. I was 12 or 13 years old when I started dropping by. My dad got ill in 91/92’ and I was asked to take over. I didn’t plan on it but it was something that I had to take in. - [PAVEL ACEVEDO - ALL WALLS MUST FALL.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/05/09/pavel-acevedo/) - I always like to work around characters that represent ambiguity; the one I made for Snakebite represented youth more than anything. It’s also inspired by my daughter, she was born here, which is the reason why I came and stayed here. I believe the best way to question power structures is through youth - I still have take on side projects as an independent educator, because changing the cycle starts with them. - [LAURIE STEELINK - GATHERING POWER III.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/05/10/laurie-steelink/) - This booth was originally constructed for me to go to the Sante Fe Indian Market in 2019. It's only a 2-day event, Saturday & Sunday. It's very quick, but the occasion is pretty awesome because you have people from all over the world who come to New Mexico - 100,000+ people showing up at the - [DESMADRE - NEGATIVE SHINE.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/05/09/desmadre-negative-shine/) - LUIS: Art is everything within creating a vibration of sound, whether it be cumbia, hardcore, rap, metal... It's our creative expression, from Chucky coming up with a riff, to the creative bassline that Brando lays down, to the backbone of the drum parts and Martin's interpretation of that, to whatever Carlos ends up writing out... - [CALCIFIED REMAINS - 818 GRIND DEATH.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/04/23/calcified-remains/) - When we started as a grind band in the valley, we didn't see many other Latinos playing this genre. And the recognized bands we did play with, were white. Now that we know and play with bands out in LA, we're always seeing Latinos. It's cool to rep our heritage in this music and see the positive responses we get from our followers. We have a design with Juan Gabriel and "818 Grindcore" under him, that's us repping our Mexican culture and the 818. - [CONCUSSION.33 ft. JUNKJIVES.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/04/18/concussion-33/) - I’ve been listening to heavy music my whole life. My dad influenced me a lot; he grew up when the punk scene was really popping in the valley. I love the anger that comes with the music. It’s raw and unfiltered and beneficial for everyone involved. When I perform & see people f*cking with my drumming, it makes me want to play harder and with more energy. I think I’ve really changed my perception on things since I started playing shows - listening to what people in the scene have to say about struggles and everyday issues really opened my eyes to how intense life can be. - [POLIO - NORTH COUNTY NOISE.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/04/16/polio/) - We're from North County San Diego, up in the woods like San Marcos and Fallbrook. Very rural area. It's kind of barren, not much going on out there. Definitely gives us this kinda lonely, desolate vibe that I can feel in our music. The scene up here is kind of dead. There's only like three really good bands from North County, being Dead Martyr, Madrugado, and Private Property. The rest are just indie & pop punk bands that aren't even that special, really. We wanted to do something different from what the North County scene had, wanted to be the heaviest thing to come out of there. - [MOM BODY - 951 MINCE/GRIND.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/03/27/mom-body/) - We live near the desert, it gets real hot in the summers. Living in a Hispanic household holds influence over our sound, too. I currently live/work in NorCal; being in the forests under tall trees and hiking tall mountains gives me lots of time to think of new riffs and ideas for future songs. The commute opens me up to more ideas as well. My brother stays down south, so when we meet up, we combine what we’ve been cooking up in our heads and run with it. - [SVA - KTOWN HXC.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/03/26/sva-ktown-hxc/) - DIY gives us a chance to have a voice. It gives opportunities to smaller groups that don’t have the chance to play in venues and develop a lot of exposure and experience. - [ENTER: CHIMERA.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/03/25/enter-chimera/) - Our main focus is to speak up on fem-forward and societal issues that others might be uncomfortable bringing up themselves. We also try to have fun playing music. - [AYE_MOST.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/02/28/aye_most/) - [Every Venue is Dead - CON on OC Generator Shows.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/12/08/every-venue-is-dead-con-on-oc-generator-shows/) - "If we're playing any venue in this economy, it's like $10 to $12 tickets. And you have to see other bands that you don't really know. Like, there's no shows where there's an actual scene set up, where actual bands that would play a backyard are now in a venue - no, it's cut up. 'Cause you have to have a headliner and an opener... It's different." - [ROB COONS - PURSUIT OF DISORDER.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/01/29/rob-coons-pursuit-of-disorder/) - I want someone to be able to walk up to my photo & feel the happiness, the rage, the sadness; the intensity of the moment. Pure emotion and energy. - [DANCEFLOORMURDER.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/01/17/dancefloormurder/) - It took me 20 years of doing music to realize that I should be a paid photographer. And it took a few years of being a paid photographer for it to pull me back into music, the right way. - [PRETTY HECTIC - DEVIATED STATE.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2024/01/04/pretty-hectic-deviated-state/) - It's weird because we've been around for a long time and we're still trying to get on all the cool hardcore shows. Like, we want to play For The Children - it would be cool to get that reach and put Harbor Area on the map, but we've heard through people that we don't get put on big hardcore shows because we're just a 'backyard band.' You play too many punk shows, so we can't take you seriously. - [CASKET MUSH - KEEP GRIND POLITICAL.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/12/25/casket-mush-keep-grind-political/) - If anything, it really is an emotional experience, playing and listening to this. All the anger and explosion you feel every day of your f*****g life wrapped up in a genre. That's exactly how I felt when I was growing up. And I had a scene to reflect it, you know? - [INCARI - RAT KING.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/12/15/incari-rat-king/) - I did all the tracking myself for Rat King and sent it off to Andrew Jay + Nick Townsend for mixing/mastering. It was kind of scary but they did a great job at making us sound how we should. I learned a lot about tracking just from sending out that one song... We're recording a short EP right now to drop next year, after that we have another 2 short releases planned that we're still figuring out and writing for. One of them might be a split with our good IE doom homies, but you'll hear more about it as it develops. - [PUNK GENTRIFICATION AND THE DIY CYCLE - PRAYFORDEATH.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/12/07/punk-gentrification-and-the-diy-cycle-prayfordeath/) - Muni: When I started drumming for this band, a lot of people knew me because I used to shoot and film shows. As I documented the scene, I noticed that a lot of these people who used to be in the crowd graduated to playing their own shows, becoming their own promoters, creating their own zines, etc, etc. And then those people graduated to running their own businesses, mastering their own trades, managing their own recording studios, whatever, whatever. I realized that DIY is a cycle; there always has to be a new person to fill in that spot in the crowd. But right now it's like the blind lead the blind. The OG's we looked up to had the core values of what it was like to gather a community and lead by example, down to the smallest things - you see someone fall in the pit, you pick 'em up... You got an extra snack or beer, you offer... Whatever. Or how about just not charging for water? A lot of the people around now don't have that in them. You bump into someone at a show and the most you'll get is a dirty look. What the f*** happened? - [Sullen Eyes - Swallowed by the Depths. San Diego HxC/MxC.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/12/05/sullen-eyes-swallowed-by-the-depths-san-diego-hxc-mxc/) - I definitely feel like there's been a boom in hardcore recently - partly due to TikTok making anything and everything blow up. And with that, I've seen shows getting more & more expensive. I can't say exactly what it is, I don't book shows or know the logistics behind it, but I will say going to a show at 20 to 25 dollars can feel a little weird, especially in extremely DIY spaces... But yeah, I would say there are a lot more people in hardcore now because of social media. That's when people only start seeing music as a monetary opportunity - when they know no matter what they charge, people will come to the shows. That's a disservice. So many kids want to take part in their local scenes but can't because they don't have the money or it's not all ages or something like that. - [Something Weird - The Sleeperz on Long Beach Punk.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/12/03/something-weird-the-sleeperz-on-long-beach-punk/) - I didn't find the punk community until I moved to Long Beach. I didn't have social media, my hometown had no scene, and for a long time, I thought nothing like what we're doing now was even possible anymore. I was the only person in high school with a band - we'll put it that way. But the diversity here is insane. People feel loved and accepted in this community, and most importantly, people really feel like they can be themselves. Long Beach brings out the best in musicians and artists, really gives them a place to express themselves however they want. - [Paint Your Depression - Reed Smith.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/11/21/paint-your-depression-reed-smith/) - I'm the black sheep in my family, for sure. When I turned 12, depression took me over. And when I finally found drugs and alcohol, it was the first time I'd ever experienced any kind of relief. Even though I hate being drunk - wild, I know. But if I drink half a beer, I'm buying coke. Then heroin, then this or that. It took me ten years to figure out that pattern after doing it over and over and over again. But fuck dude, I've been trying to get sober pretty much since I started. I knew off the rip I was an addict, hands down, immediately. - [SPUNK ON THE RISE OF NOS USE AT PUNK SHOWS.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/11/14/spunk-on-the-rise-of-nos-use-at-punk-shows/) - B: I don't wanna support a system that gets a bunch of kids high. All for one, but there's a bunch of venues getting traction where kids always end up fighting each other and getting loaded. Just a lot of drama. There's no point in supporting a spot where people don't even care to see you. I mean, there's always gonna be some people at the front who actually dig you, but when people chill outside, in the corners, on drugs... Those hotspots? The ones where everyone's NOS'd out? Go to a function, don't go to a show. - [ENTER: INFIDEL.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/11/01/enter-infidel/) - I used to be super harsh on grindcore, death metal, genres like that... Why would anyone want to listen to something that heinous? Or at least, where's the balance? Not to connect it to anger, because when I listen to that stuff it doesn't make me angry, but I think after everything I'd been through this music has helped me make peace with it all. - [FOUL. OC HXC.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/10/19/foul-oc-hxc/) - Yo, I’m Marco or Baba whatever y’all wanna call me, but I play drums in Foul. My brothers showed me everything I know about music. They both play in their own bands & don’t get along for reasons, but both of them really have impacted my life. - [Photojournal - The Haven September 25, 2023.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/10/06/photojournal-the-haven-september-25-2023/) - Featuring Claybirds, Quiet Fear, A Continent Named Coma, Live Longer Burn Everything, and Vs Self @ The Haven on September 25, 2023. - [Photojournal - Dead Relatives September '23 Release Show.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/09/28/photojournal-dead-relatives-september-23-release-show/) - Featuring Differences, Auditory Anguish, Fracture, God Awful, Montclair, and Stateside @ Bad Dogg Compound on September 16, 2023. All photos by Cole Beldyn Larsen. (@colebeldyn) - [God Awful - Premeditated.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/09/27/god-awful-premeditated/) - The hardcore scene has been very welcoming to all of us and it's brought some amazing people into our lives. The best part about IE hardcore in my opinion is the sense of community. There is always a familiar face at our own shows, and even at shows we attend that we don't play at. There are so many people we have to thank for constantly showing love and lifting us up. We can only hope to do the same for others and show everyone twice as much love as they show us. - [Auditory Anguish - Tragedies of Western Existence.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/09/27/auditory-anguish-tragedies-of-western-existence/) - Goat brought out a small bottle of tequila at like 9AM and said, ‘Whenever I record, time doesn’t exist.’ And he was right - you really didn’t feel the time pass in there. Abe was the first one up and laid out the drums from like 10:30-2 after mic setups, testing, etc, etc. Diego followed with the guitar, Goat followed with the bass, I finished up with the vocals. - [The Family Portrait - Differences. Track by Track.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/09/16/the-family-portrait-differences/) - There was a picture of Jesus on the ceiling that she used to talk to who she thought was her friend. And I'm sure he was... Um, (laugh). But I went to go visit recently, and I saw that my aunt finally took that photo down. I'm 28 now, and I'm still trying to figure out 18 years later how to deal with all this stuff. This project has been such a big help. - [SWEET DREAMS, DEAD MEMORIES - MI VIDA LOCA by Jessica Edith Cerda.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/09/22/sweet-dreams-dead-memories-mi-vida-loca-by-jessica-edith-cerda/) - Initially, this piece was brainstormed the last week of July 2023 and the pencil didn’t hit the paper till July 28 all the way till August 24, a little under a month of very well-used hours to get this pieced and framed, ready in time. I loved creating this piece and the emotions and memories that came with illustrating sweet dreams, dead memories. - [Commercialized DIY in Los Angeles. With Fracture.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/09/14/commercialized-diy-in-los-angeles-with-fracture/) - LA's becoming pretty commercialized, for sure, as far as the production groups that throw shows. Even the stuff that presents DIY; if you follow the band pages on these bills individually, it’s presented in a very DIY way. ‘Look at our 35mm photos, look at this cool collage-y art thing…’ And the flyers, especially the flyers. It looks so DIY that they're almost tapping into our scene, you know? And now the standard in this city is a very commercialized DIY, especially in hardcore, for sure. For sure. - [Implied Powers in the Greek Ambient Scene - Submersion Records.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/30/implied-powers-in-the-greek-ambient-scene-submersion-records/) - Taking the landscape and melancholy quiet of Bulgaria and the direct, hyper political art found in Thessaloniki to make… something. As of writing, I'm still working on what it is, but I got some ideas involving charcoal infused toothpaste and pea soup, and it's gonna be fucking revolutionary mark my words. - [As the songs start to take flesh, they usually tell you what they're about.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/24/as-the-songs-start-to-take-flesh-they-usually-tell-you-what-theyre-about/) - I tend to mix & match verses or completely transplant lyrics to another song last minute (All In/This Prison). Some of them have a concept from day one (Feral & Possessor) & others I got to listen to for the first time in the booth with everyone else (Pity Party / DOA) ... - [Dreary's Blueberry Crumble Pie.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/24/drearys-blueberry-crumble-pie/) - Preheat oven to 375°F. In a large bowl, mix berries with granulated sugar. Add cornstarch and salt - mix until berries are coated... Add lemon juice and transfer to an 8x8 square baking dish... In a bowl, beat together butter and brown sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy... - [Stepping Stones with Quiet Fear.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/23/stepping-stones-with-quiet-fear/) - Speaking for Jonathan and myself, we grew up in the East LA, Boyle Heights area. We were heavily influenced by Chicano culture growing up, but when listening to our favorite bands, we noticed we weren't really represented as people - like man, why do we love these bands so much, and yet there's none of us in there? - [Well Hell on Identity. + QNA.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/22/well-hell-on-identity-qna/) - When people feel the need to say ‘Hey, you do that pretty well for being _____.’ Whatever happened to just being good at something because you are? - [Eternity Rave Magazine #15 (1994) Reissue. Ft. Lemon D.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/18/eternity-rave-magazine-15-1994-reissue/) - Only a minutes walk from the city's extremely popular heavy metal club, we found down a back street, a venue with an enticing foyer and front wall - Planet Earth, est. 1993. Previously host to Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles, & the Kray twins as La Dolce Vita (Italian for 'The Sweet Life'), in 30 years time the space had ushered in a new wave of voguish electronic acts, such as Chicago disc jockey Marshall Jefferson & London house vocalist Alison Limerick... - [The First Rolling Papers Were Maize Husks. + How-to.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/16/the-first-rolling-papers-were-maize-husks-how-to/) - The cigarette industry is currently valued at ~49.4 billion dollars per year & the rolling paper industry generates approximately 1,217.08 million USD in cash flow annually. In 2006, over 250 million tons of corn waste was tossed globally. This statistic has only increased as the demand for food increases parallel to Earth's rising population. Though there is no safe form of smoke inhalation, there is something to be said about the amount of industry that goes into producing rolling papers out of a material you couldn't smoke out of previously. - [Indigenous American Crops Have Been the Cornerstone of Global Cuisine since the 1700s.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/12/indigenous-american-crops-have-been-the-cornerstone-of-global-cuisine-since-the-1700s/) - The most consumed vegetable on the planet is the tomato at ~182M tonnes produced yearly. The variety we eat today was developed by Mesoamerican ancients. That is to say: not even pizza was not what we know it as until the colonization of the Americas. - [Four Years In A Vacuum - Violet Menace.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/08/violet-menace/) - Originally, I considered going into teaching art, which is something that a degree would help with, but I don't feel passionate about it. It's not something I wanted to do - it's something I felt like I had to do, to have a career. The last thing we need is more teachers who aren't passionate about teaching. - ['Oppenheimer' leaves out the History of Navajo Nuclear Waste.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/08/02/oppenheimer-leaves-out-the-history-of-navajo-nuclear-waste/) - That's what I mean by the detriments of industrialization & continued extraction of natural resources. It stops the flow of our people, especially traditionalists who are trying to live in a very traditional way. Part of that process is having this relationship with nature & Mother Earth. But when communities start to pop up close to reservation lands, that brings a train of industries, distribution centers, automobiles... It's a domino effect. - [Manufactured Connections.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/07/19/manufactured-connections/) - There's a lot of weirdness around people in the industry. I don't know... & then there's bands like Zulu: even though they have a following or whatever, they were super open & willing to chat. No problem talking to some DIY mag. I literally went up to the merch booth at The Observatory like: "Yo. - [MY DISPARITY REVEALS ITSELF IN SOLIDARITY WHEN IT WASN'T ALWAYS SO.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/07/27/gatekeeping-class-divides-chicano-identity/) - Being third generation, a lot of culture has been lost. My family already started speaking English by the time I was born. I have family in Mexico that I only hear stories about. I don’t know if I’ll ever even be able to meet them because my grandparents are gone now. I never got names down, never got locations down. You don’t think about those things when you’re a kid. - [Working Class Jackets.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/07/14/working-class-jackets/) - None of us come from a place of privilege. It wasn’t an easy thing for our parents, especially when we were teenagers, to just give us money to go do music or support us. They didn’t have money like that either. So even though it’s me on stage, I wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t - [Inland Empire's Warehouse Crisis.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/07/04/inland-empires-warehouse-crisis/) - It's like our whole economy now is based around these warehouses. So everyone’s afraid to get rid of them because they've provided so many jobs, but it’s more like they’ve mowed down all of our previous industries. This part of California used to be known for producing wine; like how central California is? Napa Valley? That’s how the Inland Empire used to be. - [CRYTHENGRIND ON 909.](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/07/02/crythengrind-on-909/) - I felt stuck in Rialto. Stepping out I would see mountains stretching around my head, wrapping the city like the rim of a bowl. I would sit outside & wait for a flood to come & drown everything out… freeways, cars, planes, screaming, arguments, dogs, helicopters... I've had the opportunity to work with photographers from all over Southern California, & every time I meet someone genuinely talented & unique, I ask myself: Why does the culture assume talent can only come from big cities? - [Piercing The Lungs of The Earth — #MarcoTemporalNão](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/05/31/piercing-the-lungs-of-the-earth-marcotemporalnao/) - Indigenous groups within Brazil's two-thirds of the Amazon rainforest are facing international human rights violations, habitat loss, & by extension, genocide. For the last inhabitants of the Amazon, losing their rights to occupy land means losing the guardians of half the planet's remaining rainforests. (Featuring photos from Amazônia, Sebastião Salgado). - [MILLY Behind the Scenes w/ Justice Vaughn Ott, feat. Mark Cheche](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/11/19/milly-behind-the-scenes-w-justice-vaughn-ott-feat-mark-cheche/) - "I met with upcoming director Justice Vaughn Ott by the LA river for a chat over coffee & record shopping. Carving a name for himself through camera work for Atiba Jefferson on Turnstile music videos, Fender sessions, & First We Feast, he's now channeling his own brand of directing. Having worked with MILLY on every video since he left the band, he's currently collaborating with Deaton Chris Anthony, Momma, & more artists..." - [The New-School Origins of The Acid Tests. #ChinookJustice](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2023/04/27/the-new-school-origins-of-the-acid-tests-chinookjustice/) - During one of his first MK-ULTRA peyote trips, Kesey hallucinated a Native American man sweeping the floors of the hallways. He wrote the first 3 pages of the novel during this encounter... By designing the character as a minority figure, Kesey was able to comment directly on psychiatry, institutionalization, & cultural assimilation at large. - [WACKO on COVID Clown Parties, Hate Pages, & Dream Composition; NPU/BCP 12/10](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/12/14/wacko-on-covid-clown-parties-hate-pages-npu-bcp-12-10/) - "Our best descriptions come from people talking shit. We have a hate page that reposts all our knocks. My favorite post on it is a description of our band from the Denny's video saying, 'Fuck WACKO, this isn't hardcore. This isn't even power violence or fastcore, this is just a middle school jam band; fuck this band.' (haha) I love that." - [The Church of Cancer Christ; BCP Punk Wedding @ NPU, 4/15](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2022/06/24/the-church-of-cancer-christ-bcp-punk-wedding-npu-4-15/) - "Like as I'm sitting here talking to you, I'll hear a little bit of, 'Hey, this guy's alright.' Or, 'Hey, you know what? Don't give this guy too much,' or, 'Watch out for her...' You know? Gut feelings. Sometimes the word of God is just a sea of children singing songs together & loving each other. How about tonight? Hanging out with strangers, hugging the people next to you, showing love to people you might not show love to outside these walls." - [Pushing Buttons w/ Spunk; Supply & Demand 2/4/22](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2022/04/05/pushing-buttons-w-spunk-supply-demand-2-4-22/) - "Yeah. I feel like music's kind of the same right now; a regurgitation of everything prior. And we're just a part of that cycle, you know? But I mean to stand out, you gotta be the shittiest. & I think that's where we're succeeding." - [Dead Boys, Compton Punks, & Teddy Bear Stuffing: Deth Coast; The Smell 11/5/21](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2022/02/11/dead-boys-compton-punks-the-smell-11-5-21/) - "My background's mostly Brooklyn punk. I fuck heavy with Dead Boys, but also The Ramones for their poppy fun take on the scene. Saw Best Coast live & I thought, 'Dude, I'm never going to be that good.' Around that time all my best friends started doing meth so I stopped talking to them... I'm not the best, but I don't smoke meth. So it's Deth Coast." - [Rocky Horror Shadowcasting w/ Midnight Insanity](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2022/01/18/rocky-horror-shadowcasting-w-midnight-insanity/) - "I think people have this idea that Rocky is all about sex, but it's not. It's about being yourself; being honest & comfortable with who you are." - [Moments, Diction, & Synesthesia: This Is Swan Faucet. Dyzzy on Vinyl, 10/2](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/10/20/moments-diction-synesthesia-this-is-swan-faucet-dyzzy-on-vinyl-10-2/) - "Everytime we play a song it's different. It's always a jam. The moment tells us when to push, when to pull." - [MyVeronica on Breaking Arms & makeoutclub.com; Halloween UCLA, 10/30](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/11/26/myveronica-on-breaking-arms-makeoutclub-com-halloween-ucla-10-30/) - "The track I played called Makeoutclub was inspired by this pre-Myspace social networking site of the same name. It was this internet subculture community 'for indierockers, hardcore kids, record collectors, artists, bloggers, & hopeless romantics' (site tagline). I pieced the lyrics for that song from post excerpts..." - [Marcy Playground on Deadheads & Modern Influences; The Canyon Montclair 11/12](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/11/13/marcy-playground-on-deadheads-the-canyon-montclair-11-12/) - "John Wozniak, guitarist & singer-songwriter of the band, told The Morning Call in 1998 that he followed the Grateful Dead from ages 14-20 selling LSD & hard-boiled eggs for a living. Reading that he had indulged in over 100 acid trips himself during that time, I asked him how his time as a Deadhead had influenced his sound..." - [German Cops, The Acid Tests, & Chaz Ferrare: The Sleeperz, XMAS Stoop Show 12/18](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2022/01/02/german-cops-the-acid-tests-chaz-ferrare-the-sleeperz-xmas-stoop-show-12-18/) - "She started throwing a temper tantrum & wouldn't let me get my things to the point where I had to call the fucking cops in Germany. These dudes rolled up like the fucking Gestapo, big ass leather boots & uniforms. They looked at me like 'What did you do!?' I was like 'No! You have to understand, I'm just trying to get the hell out of here. I'm just trying to live my life & get back to California!'" - [julie on Macy's Gingerbread Cookies; HoB Anaheim 11/6](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/11/24/julie-on-macys-gingerbread-cookies-hob-anaheim-11-6/) - "In the beginning, it was this rockabilly-indie-punk thing. Then we met Alex at a show & bonded over MBV; that band kickstarted our current taste of shoegaze, noise pop, twee pop... Things of that nature. We started honing in on our influences & understanding what we really like to make." - [MILLY on Weezer Cover Bands, their Debut Full-Length, & Deep-Cut Emo, El Cid 9/9](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/10/13/milly-on-weezer-cover-bands-their-debut-full-length-deep-cut-emo-el-cid-9-9/) - "Spencer put us on to a lot of deep-cut emo, so I feel like that's where we're at right now. I like current bands too, but I feel like there's more star power in the 90's." - [Momma on Kissing Fans, Moving Coast-to-Coast, & their New Record; HoB Anaheim 11/6](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/11/10/momma-on-kissing-fans-moving-coast-to-coast-hob-anaheim-11-6/) - "In Sacramento, this girl asked if I could kiss her. I said no at first, but I ended up doing it. On the cheek. Allegra's recommendation." - [Smooth Jas on Canh Khổ Qua & Songwriting as a Diary, FTG 9/22](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/10/05/smooth-jas-on-canh-kho-qua-songwriting-as-a-diary-ftg-9-22/) - "For me, music was a personal thing. It's sort of like writing in a diary. Whenever I felt emotionally distressed as a kid, I'd go to my room & start playing piano or singing my favorite songs. Since then, it's kind of stayed like that. I can't really write in a diary. Makes me feel weird. But writing a song lets things out & helps me move on. It's really helpful to me." - [Makeout Reef on Growth since Existential, Garden Amp 10/7](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/10/11/makeout-reef-on-growth-since-existential-garden-amp-10-7/) - "Lyrically I tend to write about what I'm going through; we were in high school when this band took off, now we're about to graduate from university. We've all been dealing with more mature themes & I think that also comes across sonically, even when we revisit old songs." - [Friendships & 70's Mops w/ Archer Oh, Garden Amp 10/7](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/2021/10/27/friendships-70s-mops-w-archer-oh-garden-amp-10-7/) - "At our first gig at The Smell, we got to our last song Red Clouds & the room was ridiculously hot. No circulation, you're basically breathing in everyone else's breaths. I started feeling woozy mid-song & threw..." ## Pages - [Homepage](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/) - Less is more. Dead Relatives Magazine began as a web mag for artistic conversations in 2021. After our first year of writing experiments, we started hosting semi-private parties & galleries involving UCLA Radio, Orange Amps, 22 West, & Audio-Technica. During this time, we were able to realize & expand our original concept for the mag - our turn to print is set for July, 2023. A journalist arranged an LA Times piece on the precursor to Dead Relatives, Protest Aid, during operations in 2020. Managing over 50 volunteers across Los Angeles & Orange counties through a website, my teams & I provided medical support & supply stations at over 40 BLM & ICE protests over the summer George Floyd passed. - [QR1](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/qr1/) - [Aspartame](https://deadrelativesmagazine.com/portfolios/aspartame/) - Aspartame is an artificial non-saccharide sweetener 200 times sweeter than sucrose, and is commonly used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages.
